There are are 3 boxes, the available widgets box, inactive widgets box and the sidebar box, the available widget box contains the deactivated widgets and there settings are deleted, while the inactive widgets box contains the deactivated widgets but there settings are being saved. And lastly is the sidebar box. Drag and drop widget, see your widget section(Appearance>Widgets). I'm using a customized K2 theme as well, and I knew it's about time to change. WordPress 2.8 now has drag n drop widgets, so there's really no need for K2.
